lactofree BOOM!
Today I want to talk a little bit about lactose interolance because my boyfriend has lately experienced some symptoms that may point to this kind of intolerance. Some of you may already have heard about it as more and more people are diagnosed with this disease in recent times due to the fact that the awareness of this disease has increased. But what exactly is lactose interolance and what symptoms does it have?
Lactose interolance, also called lactase deficiency, means that you are not able to fully digest the milk sugar (lactose) in dairy products. While it is usually not dangerous, symptoms can be really uncomfortable for someone who suffers from lactose interolance.
Lactase is an enzyme produced by the lining of your small intestine. A deficiency of this enzyme is responsible for lactose interolance. Although many people have low levels of lactase, only those who also have associated signs and symptoms have, by definition, lactose interolance. The good thing concerning this disease is that you can control symptoms very effectively if you choose a diet without dairy products. A person with lactose interolance may suffer from diarrhea, nausea, abdominal cramps, bloating as well as gas. All these symptoms can vary from being very mild to being sometimes fairly severe.
Telling you all these facts about lactose intolerance and showing you all the nice symptoms it can produce, you may ask yourself now what you could do to prevent getting this kind of disease? There are, in fact, some factors that can make you more prone to lactose interolance, although these factors are none that you really have an influence on. Some risk factors are increasing age, ethnicity, prpemature birth, diseases affecting the small intestine and certain cancer treatments. Studies have shown that lactose interolance is most common in black, Asian, Hispanic and American Indian people. Small intestine problems that can cause lactose interolance are bacterial overgrowth, celiac disease and Crohn's disease. Additionally, if your age increases, your risk for lactose interolance also increases.. As you see, there are many factors that you really cannot influence in order to prevent lactose interolance.
So, what can you do or which products can you choose from if suffering from lactose interolance?! As my boyfriend has experienced some symptoms of lactose interolance, we have been looking for products that doesn't contain lactase and we have found a pretty good range of such products at Hofer. Hofer started to have some products that are free from lactase approximately a year ago and has been offering more and more of those products recently. But enough of just telling you, now I am going to show you some of these products:
Although there are of course other supermarkets in Austria that also provide their customers with a lot of products that don't contain lactase, my boyfriend and I have experienced that we like Hofer's products pretty much. They actually have a very good taste and I like, in particular, the milk very much. So if you suffer from lactose interolance, or even if you don't, you should really give Hofer's products a try! You can also find a lot of cheeses that are free from lactose which I can really recommend trying!
So, enough of lactose and lactase and lactose interolance (:, I am going to make myself a cup of coffee now.. with lactose-free milk of course!
