All about Culture
Last week on Monday and Tuesday it was all about culture at university. After keeping ourselves busy for the last few months with our culture projects we had to do for the English course at university, we finally were able to deliver our presentations on our culture project and pass on all our gained knowledge to the fellow students. Fortunately, the weather was on our side and it wasn't extremely hot so that we had a nice atmosphere to listen to the presentations.
Before the Culture Days at university began, we had to chose some presentations we wanted to hear. I looked through the list of presentations and thought about which presentations were the most interesting ones to listen to. I decided to go to two presentations about prisons in America, one about Guantánamo and a second one about private prisons, because I am generally interested in that topic. I also went to a presentation about the greatest entrepreneurs in America, one about HIV and discrimination in America and another about Rosie the Riveter. Other presentations I saw were a presentation about the TV series Homeland and a presentation about Vietnam. We also had to chose a few presentations on Irish culture we wanted to watch and I definitely wanted to go to the presentation about Oliver Cromwell as we already learned about him in the Irish culture in the last semester.
I really liked the presentation about Oliver Cromwell because Verena showed us that Oliver Cromwell was a very controversial character in British and Irish history. Although we learned some facts about Oliver Cromwell last semester in the Irish culture, I heard some new facts about him that i hadn't known. Verena made her presentation very interesting because she showed how the Irish people saw Oliver Cromwell and how the British people saw him. He was kind of a hero for the British people because of the undeniable fact that Cromwell contributed some good to his country. On the other hand, he is one of the most hated persons in Irish history because he made it his task to 'tame' the Irish. He slaughtered the people of Wexford and Drogheda who did surrender to his forces. He used terror against the Irish. He ordered that all Irish children should be sent to the West Indies to work as slave labourers in the sugar plantations. In general, I enjoyed listening to Verena while her presentation.
Another presentation I was really impressed of was Verena's presentation about F. Scott Fitzgerald. I chose this presentation because I have already seen the film "The Great Gatsby" which is based on the work of F. Scott Fitzgerald who wrote "The Great Gatsby" in 1925. I liked the presentation of Verena very much, it was really funny listening to her and she made her presentation very lively. At the end, she showed us a quote of Fitzgerald that really impressed me and which I had to think about a few times in the last week. It really stayed in my head because I somehow think that it makes sense for myself..
Finally, the presentation I probably liked most was Sabrina's presentation about "Women for women - The will to lead". It was simply a great one! Sabrina talked Sheryl Sandberg who currently works for Facebook and who is considered to be one of the 50 most influential women of the United States. Sabrina told us that Sheryl wrote a book in which she appeals to women to lean in at work. Moreover, Sheryl Sandberg fights for equal rights for women and men. During a speech at a college, she raised the question "What would you do if you weren't afraid?". Sabrina told us that she wants to continue what Sheryl Sandberg has started and asked us to write down on a little sheet of paper what we would do if we weren't afraid. Everyone attending the presentation wrote a little statement down and put it in a box Sabrina carried with her. She intents to write a blog post about the answers she got from us. I am really looking forward to reading her blog post and I think that this is a very brilliant idea of her! In my opinion, her presentation was of very, very good quality. She was so well prepared and she delivered her presentation really well!
